OEM oil pump gears are manufactured out of powdered metal which lacks in strength and is a very brittle metal prone to shatter. In the past OEM oil pump gears have failed on high HP and sustained high RPM applications. When building a performance Mitsubishi 3000GT engine it is recommended to upgrade the oil pump gears as part of the engine overhaul.
